Browser engine update for Website Screenshot and Power BI

Applies to: The Website Screenshot and Power BI (without embed) integrations Update rolls out: 3 nov 2026

We are updating the browser engine that PLAYipp uses for two separate integrations: Website Screenshot and Power BI (without embed). From 3 nov 2026, sources in these integrations always run on the latest version of Chrome, and the option to choose an older Chromium version is removed. The update closes a critical security vulnerability on our servers and keeps the service protected going forward.

What is happening and why?

A critical vulnerability, CVE-2026-111497 (also called HTTP2Shell), was published in October 2026. It affects Brotli, a compression format that almost every website and browser uses.

A specially crafted website can exploit the bug in programs that unpack Brotli content. It is rated Critical (CVSS 9.2). There are no confirmed reports of it being exploited in the wild, but researchers have demonstrated it in a lab.

To take a screenshot of a web page (Website Screenshot) or a Power BI report without embed, PLAYipp opens it in a Chrome browser on our servers. The Chrome versions we have offered so far all contain the vulnerable Brotli code. The fix is to move every screenshot to the latest Chrome, which includes the patched version.

Which sources and versions are affected?

Website Screenshot and Power BI are two different integrations and are affected in different ways. All sources in the Website Screenshot integration are affected, whichever version they are set to. For the Power BI integration, it depends on whether the Use embed setting is turned on for the source:

  • Power BI without embed is affected. The report is opened in Chrome on our servers and shown on screen as a screenshot.
  • Power BI with embed is not affected. The player loads Microsoft's iframe directly in the player's own browser, and no screenshot is taken on our servers.

Other integrations and media types, such as RSS, image and video, are not affected.

What changes for you?

  • The version dropdown shows only "Latest". The Chromium 107, 128 and 135 options are removed from the Website Screenshot settings.
  • Existing Website Screenshot sources switch automatically. Sources saved with an older Chromium version are moved to "Latest". Only the browser version changes, all other settings on the source stay the same. You don't need to re-save them.
  • Power BI without embed updates automatically. There is no version setting to change. Power BI with embed is not affected by the update.
  • Some pages may look slightly different. A newer browser can render fonts, layouts or login pages a little differently than an older one.

What should you check?

Most sources keep working without any action. We recommend that an administrator checks the following after 3 nov 2026:

  1. Sources that used Chromium 107 or 128. These see the biggest jump in browser version. Preview them and confirm they look right on screen.
  2. Website Screenshot sources with scripting (for example login, cookie banners or clicks). Only Website Screenshot sources can have scripting. Some steps may no longer be needed, and some pages may need a new or adjusted step.
  3. Pages that only worked in an older browser. These need to be updated by the website owner. PLAYipp can no longer keep older browser versions for individual pages.

If a source stops showing correctly and you can't fix it under scripting, contact support@playipp.com with the source name and the screen it runs on.

Our policy going forward

From now on, PLAYipp always runs sources in the Website Screenshot and Power BI (without embed) integrations on the latest stable version of Chrome. We update the browser engine as part of our regular maintenance, not only when a vulnerability is announced.

This is how the rest of the web works: browsers update automatically, and websites are expected to work in a current browser. It means security fixes reach your screens as soon as possible. We no longer offer older browser versions, even if a specific web page only works in one.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to do anything for the update to take effect?

No. The update is applied on our side and all sources switch automatically. Some Website Screenshot sources with scripting may need adjusting to work in the newer browser, see What should you check?.

Are my screens or media players affected?

No. The vulnerability concerns the browser on PLAYipp's servers that takes the screenshots, not the software on your screens or media players.

How do I see if my Power BI source uses embed?

In the Added sources list, each Power BI source has a Use embed toggle. If the toggle is on, the report loads directly on the player and is not affected by the update. Read more in the Power BI guide.

Can I keep an older Chromium version for a page that needs it?

No. Older versions contain known security vulnerabilities, so we no longer offer them. The page needs to be updated to work in a current browser.

Will this happen again?

We now keep the browser on the latest version continuously. Future updates happen in the background, and we will only notify you if a change requires action from you.
