Installation of Philips 5050D

Important warning

Warning: Firmware update may damage the screen permanently A bug in the screen's firmware means that updating the firmware can permanently render the screen unusable. Do not perform firmware updates until the bug is resolved and this guide has been updated.

This guide describes how to install PLAYipp on a Philips 5050D display. Please read the important warnings below before starting the installation.

Note: The steps in this guide may look slightly different depending on your screen's model and software version. The overall process is the same.

Tip: A USB mouse is recommended for this installation. It is also possible to activate an on-screen pointer using the Pointer button on the remote control and navigate it with the arrow keys, but this is considerably slower.

Before you begin

  • A USB mouse and a USB keyboard are recommended for this installation.
  • The screen must be connected to the internet.

Part 1: Initial setup

  1. Start the screen and select your preferred language.
  2. Select Timezone and set the correct timezone.
  3. Select Skip (or equivalent) when prompted to clone media files from USB (Clone Display Settings).
  4. Customize the Security settings or skip this step.
  5. Set an Admin password or skip this step.
  6. Configure the SFTP settings or skip this step.
  7. Select your network type under Network and connect the screen to your desired network.
  8. Select Done (or Finish) to complete the initial setup.

Part 2: Open the hidden menu and launch Chromium

  1. Press the Home button on your remote and then press 1 + 8 + 8 + 8 using the number keys.
  2. Select Apps from the menu.
  3. Open the Chromium app.

Part 3: Download the bootstrap app

  1. Use the USB keyboard to type https://install.playipp.com into the browser's address bar. The website can detect the device type automatically for most of our supported models. If detection fails, a list of available device types will be displayed and you can select the correct model manually.
  2. Click "Tap OK on your remote to start the download" using the USB mouse to start the download.
  3. If Chromium asks for permission to download files from the site, select "Download anyway" to continue.

Part 4: Install the app via File Manager

  1. Press the Back button on your remote to close the browser and return to the Apps menu.
  2. Select File manager.
  3. Select Internal.
  4. Open the Download folder.
  5. Select and open the file "com.playipp.bootstrap...". If prompted to enable "Unknown sources", do so under Settings > Security > Unknown sources. Then return to the file manager and open the file again.
  6. Confirm the installation by selecting Install.
  7. Select Open after the initial installation is complete.
  8. The app will now download and install additional content. Wait for the process to finish.
  9. Press Back to return to the main menu.

Part 5: Set boot source and power save mode

  1. Open Settings from the main menu.
  2. Select Signage display.
  3. Select Source settings.
  4. Select Custom app.
  5. Select PLAYippLauncher and then Save to confirm.
  6. Press Home and open Advanced Option. Navigate to Power save and make sure Mode 4 is selected. Power save modes on Philips 5050D:
    • Mode 1 [TCP off, WOL on, auto off]
    • Mode 2 [TCP off, WOL on, auto on/off]
    • Mode 3 [TCP on, WOL off, auto on/off]
    • Mode 4 [TCP on, WOL off, no auto on/off] (Recommended)
  7. Press Back to exit the menu.
  8. Press the Source button on your remote and select Custom.
